Greeks Turn to Sustainable Living - Греки обращаются к "зелёной" жизни

[Economic Crisis Drives Lifestyle Change] On the slopes of Mount Telaithrion on the island of Evia, a group of young Greeks have left the busy city and created a self-reliant rural community. Their goal is to eat only the organic produce they grow themselves, to free themselves from the national electricity grid, and to exchange what they grow or make instead of using money. The project, whose ultimate goal is to create a school for sustainable living, was the idea of 4 Athenians who met online in 2008 and bonded over their dissatisfaction with the daily grind of city life. In their 2nd year of living permanently on a forested patch of land next to the village of Aghios, 80% of the food they eat now comes from their 2 herb and vegetable gardens and the fruit they pick off the trees. The group, almost all of whom follow a strict vegetarian diet, sleep communally in yurts – portable, tent-like dwellings made of tarp often seen in Central Asia. Whatever is left over from their gardens, they exchange in the village for the supplies they cannot produce. 32-year-old co-founder Apostolos Sianos quit a well-paying job as a website designer in Athens to help start the community, which is called ‘Free and Real.’ [Apostolos Sianos, Co-Founder of 'Free and Real']: “The crisis or the austerity measures doesn’t actually affect you because you create your life and your future everyday, it has nothing to do with the outside circle. It may (have) affected us, but only in a good way because more and more people are willing to be self-sufficient and sustainable, so they contact us, and more and more people after the crisis want to get involved.” The group actively uses social media, and last year over 100 people from Greece and abroad asked about joining or collaborating in some way. Dionysis Papanikolaou, for example, gave up a lucrative academic career to be closer to nature and far from the heavy atmosphere of the financial crisis in Greece. [Dionysis Papanikolaou, Group member]: "Keep on reading news, watching TV - and the crisis, the crisis, the crisis... Even subconsciously you see the crisis, the crisis. Here there's no crisis - I mean it makes no difference." The group take pride in being self-sufficient. [Panagiotis Kantas, Co-Founder of 'Free & Real']: "The reality of life is right outside of your door. When you want to warm yourself up, you actually have to go out in the wood and gather wood, firewood, then bring it home to actually warm yourself up." They currently organize seminars on organic farming and have drawn up plans for a large school on sustanaible living to be constructed later this summer and for which they raised money on a crowdfunding site on the Internet. "I just try to be the change I want to see instead of waiting for the government to make the change or instead of voting for some to make the change. I try to be the change."

Они питаются только органической пищей, выращенной своими руками, не зависят от общегосударственной электросети и обмениваются продуктами собственного земледелия и ремесла без денег. Задумка, цель которой - создание школы экологически чистого хозяйства, пришла в голову 4 афинянам, которые встретились в Интернете и сдружились на почве недовольства городской рутиной. После 2 лет жизни на лесистом участке у деревни Агиос, 80% всей потребляемой ими пищи приходит из 2 огородов и фруктовых деревьев. Община, почти все члены которой - веганы, ночует в юртах - переносных палаткоподобных жилищах из брезента как в центральной Азии. Излишки урожая с огородов они обменивают в деревне на то, что не могут произвести сами. 32-летний сооснователь общины Апостолос Сьянос бросил высокооплачиваемую работу веб-дизайнера в Афинах, чтобы помочь создать общину "Свободно и реально". This edition of Spotlight on the World brings us to Denmark. For years the Danes have had a tolerant and casual attitude towards just about everything – from sex to drinking their beloved beer. Even to casual speeding. There is a positive trend but 7 out of 10 motorists are still pushing the limit. But now the Danes seem to have become less tolerant of speeding motorists and they’ve come up with a rather innovative solution. Make way for the speed control Bikini Bandits, a specially trained team of enthusiastic young women not afraid to do whatever it takes so that motorists pay more attention to the speed limit. [Heidi Svendsen, Head Bandit:] “Sure, what we do is extreme but I know from my heart what we are doing is working. People are slowing down. People are noticing." [A red smoking driver:] "It’s a fantastic idea. It’s really kind of obvious. Why didn’t they think of this sooner?" - What do you think about the Bikini Bandits? [A turban-wearing taxi driver:] - The Bikini Bandits? Denmark has redeemed itself! But the plan wasn’t entirely foolproof. [Brent Koch Hansen, Traffic Police:] “In the beginning the Bikini Girls worked great. But let’s say it wasn’t entirely thought through.” One could argue that traffic in Copenhagen and much of Denmark has come to a total standstill, thus pushing the tolerance level of many Danes. [An elderly woman:] “I don’t like them and I know a lot of others that feel the same.” [Heidi:] “I couldn’t care less what anybody says. If people are slowing down, we’ve done our jobs, and since we’re the world’s best, we will continue to do our jobs.” There you have it. Denmark’s Speed Patrol Bikini Bandits.
